Varigated Mintleaf - Plectranthus madagascariensis
Plectranthus, with some 350 species, is a genus of warm-climate plants occurring largely in the southern hemisphere, in sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, India and the Indonesian archipelago down to Australia and some Pacific Islands. They are closely related to Solenostemon and are known as the spurflowers. Several species are grown as ornamental plants, as leaf vegetables, as root vegetables for their edible tubers, or as medicine. Growth Form: Herb with a creeping growth form up to 0.2 m tall. Foliage: Ovate leaves (2.5 cm wide) are mostly green with a white, scalloped margin of varying width. They occur in opposite leaf arrangement with adjacent pairs perpendicular to one another. Crushed leaves produce an oregano-like fragrance. Flowers: White, tubular flowers are 2-lipped and arranged in whorls along a spike-like inflorescence. Fruits: Dry, indehiscent fruits are known as nutlets.
